ALS Foundation Orange County Chapter

Main aim of the charity

The main aim of the ALS Foundation is to create a world without ALS. Their mission is to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. The ALS Association (National Office and the Orange County Chapter) operates under a shared mission: to help people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and to leave no stone unturned in search for the cure. They work together to accomplish their mission. The Orange County Chapter focuses primarily on helping local patients and families live with ALS while the National Office focuses primarily on research and advocacy. The Chapter supports the National Office through revenue sharing and research contributions. The National Office supports the Chapters by providing up-to-date information and materials. The ALS Association is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. The ALS Association covers all the bases — research, patient and community services, public education, and advocacy — in providing help and hope to those facing the disease.

How the employee got involved and why

Henry Bennett was a 17 year DHL employee based out of SEE. Henry was diagnosed with ALS / Lou Gehrig’s Disease last year and passed away on 2 June 2018. We wanted to do something to honor Henry’s memory and bring awareness to the terrible disease that took the life of our beloved friend and colleague.

What work does the employee do for charity?

We held a charity golf tournament in Henry’s name and partnered with ALS Association Orange County Chapter, who provided giveaways and valuable information on ALS and what work is being done to stop this dreadful disease. We raised $3100 which will go to provide services to others that are also battling ALS. The golf tournament has been approved by the USMB to be an annual tournament to benefit the ALS Foundation. In addition, we also have a team of employees participating in the Walk to Defeat ALS being held in November.

What impact would winning have on the charity?

Winning would allow the ALS Foundation Orange County Chapter to provide more ALS patients, including the father of another DHL employee at the SEE office, with the assistance they need to continue living their lives to the fullest.

What impact would winning have on the employee?

I had the privilege of working with Henry for 10 years. We spent many hours together talking about family and work and before he became ill we would also go on daily walks together during our lunch break. I saw firsthand how he slowly progressed and during his last month I had the honor of driving him to/from work. We had several employees at the SEE office doing all they could to allow Henry to continue to work until the day before his death. Henry was not only my colleague but my friend and any action I am capable of, that contributes to the eradication of the disease that took him from us, I will do in his memory.
