Main aim of the charity

In the past 2 years, I have been involving myself with a Committee youth group and has had the honor to lead as its president since its establishment together with 5 committee members each also representing the 5 (tokatoka)clans in the village community. Our Youth Group Association is made up of young people schooling and working in Suva which is Fijis Capital city on the mainland called Vitilevu. We all belong to a community called Tokou Village on an Island called Ovalau which is half a day away from the main Island by bus and ferry. Our youth group projects are always in line with that of the young people in the village. Whilst they fundraise for the projects in the island, our youth group having to be at the city uses our individual network of friends and coworkers on the mainland to helps organize fundraising activities to help fund our projects in the community at the island. We all have an urge to stay connected as young people….. and carrying out projects for the community not only keeps us together but is way to give back to the community on the island. Other things we do to stay connected are visiting our relatives at the hospital who are airlifted in from the island and are admitted here on the mainland. We also do visitations to the Retired Nuns Home for cleanups and spending the day with them. Helping out with cooking their meals for the day and spend time talking with them. In cases where one of the youths is called to eternal rest, we always ensure we are present to give sympathy cards and gift of Love as a group to show respect to the deceased family. The recent voluntary work our youth group on the mainland is doing now is utilizing the talents we have in music to produce a school song for the Village school. Our youth group, forming a choir has volunteered to do awareness for the schools Past Pupils Association Fundraising drive this year. We are producing the theme song together with the official video of the school for this Fundraising Drive this October 2018…… In the hope that it will reach interested kind donors online and on other social media for the cause of education at primary level for our village school.

How the employee got involved and why

In 2016 Tropical cyclone Winston, a massive category 5 cyclone swept through the Fiji islands. Our community, Tokou village and the village school, Loreto Catholic Primary School was one of the communities and schools that were not spared by this massive cyclone. To help the youths in the village rebuild the community to what it was before, our village youths on the mainland started our association to help them in any little way. As one of the youths on the mainland that has started working, I feel that it was my responsibility to help form our youth association on the mainland. Together with 4 other youths, we were able to form the association which is now running since the cyclone 3 years ago. Also, in the drive to raise funds to rebuild the village school, a past people association was formed to help fund-raise and help in any way to give the children in the village their right and the best of education.

What work does the employee do for charity?

As president of our youth Association, I organize meeting-ups taking into considerations the different shift times of work and schooling for our youths. Make arrangements for cleanups, visitations and other activities we do. The recent voluntary work our youth group on the mainland is doing now is utilizing the talents we have in music to produce a school song for the Village school.
