Main aim of the charity
"Udaan" is the Hindi word for "flight". Through this project, we empower girls in the red light area to know their rights and go for diverse and dignified career options, by developing their skill sets for aspirational professions, thereby equipping them to gain genuine socio-economic mobility, and, consequently preventing the inter-generational cycle of prostitution among daughters (ages 6-18) of women in brothel based prostitution.
How the employee got involved and why
I had been contributing financially to various NGOs since 2009 but wanted to actively contribute & do my bit for the society. Thus post research I came across this NGO "Apne Aap Women's Collective" in 2014 which was addressing problems related to sex workers & their families.
Given the problems faced by the sex workers & their families compounded with taboo around their profession in India limits the scope of funding & volunteers; These challenges motivated me to be part of their cause & contribute my bit.
What work does the employee do for charity?
I am mainly involved as a weekend volunteer for teaching Computer & English to the daughters of the sex workers to help them become self-reliant & get absorbed in the main stream society & stop generational cycle of prostitution.
Our NGO AAWC has been successful in helping absorb 550+ girls in mainstream society in various professions.
