Main aim of the charity
Derby Sands is part of Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity. Sands operates throughout the UK, supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby, working to improve the care bereaved parents receive, and promoting research and working closely with many different organisations to reduce the loss of babies’ lives.
How the employee got involved and why
Around 4 years ago unfortunately, Lucy's sister had a still birth but as she was not 24 weeks in the eyes of the law Sophie was classed as a miscarriage rather than a still born, which in turn meant that she never had a birth certificate nor death certificate so “so never existed” when she most definitely did. Her sister gave birth to her, held her, had prints of her feet and hands made, it was a truly sad experience.
The charity Derby Sands, (still birth & neonatal death charity), stepped in. they made this sad time a little easier for my sister. They provided her with the photos, the prints, hats, they acknowledged that Sophie was a human! They organised the funeral all free of charge! They also have a memory garden where Sophie has her own plaque along with all the other babies. They also offer counselling sessions for those who need it.
What work does the employee do for charity?
We recently took part the first UK Trailblazer Netball Tournament. This is an in house tournament against other DHL departments and functions. The prize up was £500 for our chosen charity which was Derby Sands , we won this and invited a representative from Derby Sands to EMA hub to present her with the “Cheque” . Lucy's sister also takes part in sponsored runs raising money with her friends for this amazing charity.
