KAMP Dovetail

Main aim of the charity

We have three goals: 1. To provide 5 days and 4 nights of the most unforgettable fun for the children who attend! 2. To assure a safe and encouraging environment for everyone. 3. To grow as human beings in ways we never thought possible

How the employee got involved and why

I have volunteered for KAMP Dovetail for six years. I heard about KAMP from a friend of my mother. My career goal is to be an Occupational Therapist for children with special needs. Having exposure to a wide variety of children with differences in abilities has helped mold my path for my future in the Occupational Therapy field. Working with individuals with differences in abilities is not only challenging but extremely gratifying to know that one week out of the year you have changed that child's life in some way or another.

What work does the employee do for charity?

I work one on one with a camper assigned to me for the week throughout many activities including: fishing, boating, swimming, horseback riding, movies at the theater, a carnival, arts and crafts, and much more. I am responsible for my camper and that they have the best week of their year having fun under the sun.

What impact would winning have on the charity?

Our volunteer staff works diligently all year long to secure donations of cash and supplies from area merchants and individuals. This combination of an all-volunteer staff and their year-long fund-raising campaigns allows us to offer our camp at a fraction of the cost charged by other similar camps. Our camp has been operating in this fashion for over 30 years. Many kids coming to KAMP are from low socio-economic background and cannot afford the cost to register for KAMP. The registration fee is $40.00 for each camper. The gift of sponsorship allows us to offer campers full scholarships so that they can attend KAMP at no cost to themselves or their families. The actual hard cost of food, services, materials, and supplies for our week long camp is approximately $240 per camper. This does not include any labor costs since everyone involved volunteers their time. The low $40 registration fee is the result of our year-long fundraising efforts. These fundraising efforts allow us to subsidize attending KAMP. We avoid passing the actual cost on to the campers or their families. The gift of "adoption" ($240) allows us to accept an additional camper from our waiting list that normally would not have been able to attend KAMP.

What impact would winning have on the employee?

Winning this competition would allow KAMP Dovetail to continue to grow. If more children can attend KAMP Dovetail, there will be heightened awareness towards the special needs community and how volunteers can truly change individual's lives.
