CLUBFOOT SOLUTIONS, IN COMBINATION WITH ITS SISTER CHARITY, THE PONSETI FOUNDATION, DEVELOPS AND DISTRIBUTES AN INNOVATIVE MEDICAL BRACE KNOW AS THE 'IOWA BRACE'' (DEVLEPOED AT THE UNIVERSUITY OF IOWA) FOR THE NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OF THE CHILDHOOD DEFORMITY KNOWN AS CLUBFOOT, WHICH INFLICTS OVER 100,000 CHILDREN IN THE WORLD EACH YEAR. Nearly 80% of children with congenital clubfoot birth defect are born in developing countries. Their families and local Ponseti Method trained health providers lack the funds to pay for an effective clubfoot brace. The bracing phase of the Ponseti method is the critical component of treatment that prevents the recurrence of clubfoot in children. At Clubfoot Solutions we can provide these children with the Iowa Brace and give each child a chance to live a productive life – free of pain and shame. Children who would otherwise often be cast out from their cultures and societies due to the stigmas of their deformities, and the accompanying social rejection because of it, can live a normal life of walking, running, skipping and playing like other children. The Ponseti Method for clubfoot treatment is based on a sound understanding of the functional anatomy of the foot and of the biological response of muscles, ligaments and bone to corrective position changes that can be gradually obtained by manipulation and casting. The majority of clubfeet can be corrected in infancy in about six to eight weeks if the Ponseti Method is properly applied and subsequent use of the Clubfoot Brace is adhered to in early years of life. IN 2017; WHY? BECAUSE CLUBFOOT IS IS A PERVASIVE BUT TREATABLE CHILDHOOD DEFORMITY, BUT ONLY WHEN FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH CLUBFOOT HAVE ACCESS TO TREATMENT AND OUR CRITICAL "IOWA" BRACES. I SUPPORT THIS GREAT CAUSE IN GREAT PART BECAUSE MY FATHER, AS DR IGNACIO PONSETTI, THE PIONEERING INVENTOR OF THIS NON-SURGICAL CLUBFOOT TREATMENT, HAD DEDICATED HIS ENTIRE LIFE TO HELPING CHILDREN WITH LIFE-CHANGING DEFORMITIES (IN MY FATHER'S CASE CLEFT PALATE). THE TWO WERE FRIENDS AND CONTEMPORARIES WHO CONTRIBUTED ENORMOUSLY AND QUIETLY TO THE EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF GLOBALLY IMPACTING DEFORMITIES IN CHILDREN. I HAVE FOLLOWED IN MY FATHER'S FOOTSTEPS.
