Main aim of the charity

“GAME FOR A CAUSE” is a basketball game fundraiser organized to help those in need. Recently, “Game for a Cause” was organized due to the Taal Volcano eruption in Philippines, thus causing too much damage on the area where I live (my hometown)

How the employee got involved and why

2020 has been such a surprising year. On 12 January 2020, Sunday evening, the Taal Volcano in the Philippines had erupted. My family and I were devastated because our parents, relatives, friends and countrymen are out there. I live and grew up in this area and so it is very close to my heart. I initially felt helpless because I was away from my parents, ages: 83 for dad & 79 for mom. As a son, I was worried that I was not there to take care of them during the horrific tragedy. The worry grew because we don’t have any contact due to power outage. Fortunately, my cousin who lives in a higher place called Tagaytay which is nearby our hometown was able to contact me, saying that my parents are safe. My father was able to manage to drive and escape from the eruption that night despite of zero visibility due to ashes which become a mud because of heavy rain. Another aspect of my growing anxiety is thinking about our house. We have recently build our new house in the Philippines with hard-earned money from DHL. Facing the reality that our house could be affected with the eruption is heartbreaking because we are just 7KM away from the volcano.. All the while it seems that my hard work will be wasted. With all of these tragedy happening, I was thinking if I shall go back to the Philippines. What can I do to help? I am here in Malaysia and my family and countrymen needs me. With that, I posted a donation drive in social media (Facebook) in collaboration with the Filipino basketball community here in Malaysia and the event was a success! It was heartwarming to see so many who supported and participated – some are even from far places in Malaysia who came and gave their donations! It was a community involvement – even my kids and their classmates/schoolmates in schools had participated by voluntarily bringing their donations and helping in packing the food, clothes and other things. Not only that – others have offered their donations by sending cash online, like friends from the USA. It was a very beautiful community team spirit, just like the game of basketball where we all work as a team. I am the head organizer of the charity. Previously, I have organized “Game for a Cause” to help a friend whose daughter suffered from leukemia. On another instance, it is for a worker here in Malaysia who has breast cancer. I am the one who initiates and call for action – marketing and advertising by means of social media and personal invitations. It is a task that is very close to my heart as I am happy to raise funds and offer help in any way that I can.
