Apoyo Escolar Villa 21-24
Main aim of the charity
1. Provide academic support to ensure that the children are getting the best out of school
2. Provide a space where the children could do various activities instead of being on the streets surrounded with drugs, violence and other bad influences.
How the employee got involved and why
Since I lived in El Salvador (my home country) I've been passionate about contributing towards giving every single person access to quality education. I strongly believe that every single person deserves an opportunity to become the best version of themselves. Coming from a Country with similar realities, I understand how difficult it is for a person who is born in those empoverished urban neighborhoods to thrive and triumph .
I came to Argentina on 2019 to be part of DHL's CSA YIS program, and on April of that same year I joined the project. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions we had to pause the intiative all 2020 and most of 2021. Ever since August 2021, as the restrictions lifted, we restarted the project.
What work does the employee do for charity
Back in 2019, me and a group of other professionals/university students joined a project called "Apoyo Escolar" in one of Buenos Aires' most empoverished areas (Villa 21-24). Looking to contribute to the UN SDG #4 (Quality Education), we created the project to provide academic support to children between 8-13 years old who live in the neighborhood.
The idea was to accomplish 2 important targets:
1. Provide academic support to ensure that the children are getting the best out of school
2. Provide a space where the children could do various activities instead of being on the streets surrounded with drugs, violence and other bad influences.
As of today, we are a group of 6 people going every Saturday morning to the neighborhood to try and achieve these targets. It is a compromise that I taker very personal with the 15+ children and their families that are looking for a better future for themselves and their community.
