Apoyo Escolar Villa 21
Main aim of the charity
The main goal is to enhance the learning of the children in the Villa and to provide them with classes and activities to keep them off the streets, which could be damaging to their future.
The group of people I go with and myself spend our Saturday mornings at a little school located at the Villa, where we give the learning support and do other activities to achieve our cause's goal.
How the employee got involved and why
I started doing this in February of 2019, when I came to Argentina from El Salvador as a Young International Specialist (intern).
I do it because I strongly believe that education is the only way to change those kid's realities. I used to do a lot of volunteering back in my native country and I grew a passion towards "giving back" young children at least a little bit of the opportunities I had at their age.
I also understand the importance of keeping children away from the streets, as this would mean that they might spend their time doing unhelpful (and sometimes even illegal) things.
I strongly believe that every kid deserves a chance to get out of their reality, no matter how hard it might be. It is then essential for me to at least provide them with support and learnings that might, one day, get them out of a reality they didn't choose.
What work does the employee do for charity
Every Saturday morning I go to one of Buenos Aires Ghettos (or "Villas" as they call in Argentina to the urban marginal areas) to teach English and Mathematics to kids between 6-13 years old who live in poor and precarious conditions.
I serve as a support teacher of these subjects to help kids with schoolwork and exams. The main goal is to improve their learning and, most importantly, to keep them off the streets by using their time in a productive way.
