Epilepsy Alliance Florida

Main aim of the charity

Epilepsy Alliance Florida is dedicated to supporting those impacted by epilepsy by confronting the spectrum of challenges created by seizures. They provide resources, programs, support, and hope for the over 400,000 Floridians living with epilepsy and their caregivers. Current programs include Case Management Services, Support Groups, Prevention/Education, Telemedicine, Medical & Psychological Services, Healthcare Enrollment Assistance and Seizure Dog Scholarships.

How the employee got involved and why

My passion for raising epilepsy awareness and improving the lives of those in the epilepsy community started in 2019 with my then 3-year-old sons' diagnosis. Epilepsy is the 4th most common neurological condition (after migraine, stroke & Alzheimer’s disease) and affects more than 65 million people worldwide. In fact, more people live with epilepsy than with autism spectrum disorders, Parkinson’s Disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy, combined. Yet due to the stigma that surrounds the condition, many individuals hide their diagnosis. My mission is to continue to spread Epilepsy awareness and to remove the fear/stigma and biases that surround individuals living with this condition and their families. To ensure that individuals, like my son, are provided access to resources and services that allow them to live/work/learn in a safe & welcoming environment.

What work does the employee do for charity

Since my 2020 DHL's Got Heart application, I have continued to work in the local community to raise awareness and funds for Epilepsy. A few key highlights: - Epilepsy Foundation Volunteer Ambassador and Purple Squad Member (coordinated/communicated with volunteers located in the East Coast Region) - Epilepsy Foundation "Walk to End Epilepsy" Team Captain Liaison for Florida, North Carolina & South Carolina (communicated with all team captains and organized virtual pep rallies/trainings with the Florida EF Director) - 2021 Number one (non-corporate) Fundraising Team in the State of Florida (Epilepsy Foundation's Walk to End Epilepsy) (#32 out of 761 in the nation) - Coordinated "Wear Purple for Epilepsy Awareness" days at the local Preschool and Elementary Schools. Seizure Awareness Kits personally prepared and distributed to all teachers (30+ kits). - 240+ Followers of my "Epilepsy Parent Confessions" Instagram Channel - Registered instructor for Epilepsy Foundation's Seizure First Aid Recognition & Certification Trainings - Duke Neurology (SUDEP) Focus Group Participant - Beta tester for the EDEN App (new app designed specifically for patients with epilepsy and/or their caregivers to track their journey and communicate directly with healthcare providers) - Advocate and promoter for the Seizure Safe Schools Florida bill HB 173 (contacted local/state officials, encouraged family/friends to contact as well)
